It is true they say that in giving sometimes you receive so much more. Bringing the curtains down on Breast Cancer Awareness Month, members of the Public Relations team at Sandals South Coast led by General Manager, Adrian Whitehead opted to put a smile on the faces of breast cancer warriors in Westmoreland.
The team visited communities and homes in the parish bearing gifts, sweet treats and flowers. And while their hearts were warmed by the gracious reception and appreciation of each breast cancer warrior, they were simply blown away by the strength and positivity of the ladies.
“I think what stood out most for me were the women’s stories of resilience. It really spoke volumes to just how important it is to have a positive mindset and how it can greatly influence the outcome of our situations,” said Whitehead. “In addition to that, I realized how necessary it is to have a support system. I thought it was admirable that these warriors are building their very own support network where they can be there for each other and help each other win. I am very glad that we were able to show up and show them love and applaud their courage,” he added.
Whitehead’s sentiment was echoed by, Vancylee Spencer, a breast cancer survivor from Darliston.
“When I was going through the fight, I had immense support from my spouse, my church family, my co-workers and my community members. Knowing you have people in your corner, knowing you are not in it alone, gives you a greater push to fight and forces you not to give up,” she stated. She said she would encourage folks who may know someone fighting breast cancer to show some form of support as it goes a very far way. “I am grateful for the kind gesture by the Sandals team, it says a lot and it means a lot,” shared Spencer.
The women also stressed the importance of early detection and encouraged others to not shy away from doing regular breast self-examinations and mammograms.
“Early detection is key to beating breast cancer. The sooner you know what’s going on in your body, the sooner you can start working towards remedying the issue. Every woman should make mammograms a priority,” shared Alicia Bernard, a teacher and breast cancer warrior, who was also visited by the Sandals South Coast team.
Throughout the month of October, other resorts in the Sandals chain contributed to the cause of breast cancer awareness. The Sandals Foundation collaborated with resorts in the Ocho Rios and Negril regions to assist several women with getting their mammograms done.
