Women helping women, is a new social media campaign that launched officially, October 29th, 2021. It is a campaign focused on the self-realization journey of women between the ages of 20-25 specifically. But according to Dr. Jhanille A. Brooks, “people tend to experience identity crises at various points throughout life.” This initiative was created to encourage women into taking a look at how far they actually are in the actualization process or the miles they have left to achieve it. Women helping women was created by Social Media Marketer and Gender Studies Minor, Aaliyah James and Theatre Practitioner and Drama Facilitator, Racquel Hutchinson. They created this campaign in order to raise awareness of self-worth amongst young women and the stigma they face in society. It zones in on the everyday issues women face when expected to “fall in line” with societal norms and opens a discussion on how it doesn’t leave much room for them to explore who they want to become.
The managers hope that this campaign can aid young women in getting to know themselves better. By teaching women that they can express themselves freely in a safe space. They also want to use methods of self-evaluation and goal-setting exercises in order to build the self-confidence of young women. Getting to know one’s self will reassure women that they are the equals of men while equipping them to better navigate society and achieve attainable goals.
The campaign is covered from the Instagram page, @womenhelpingwomenn. It serves as a safe space to support women while they’re getting to know themselves and each other. Women, as well as their family and friends, will be able to express themselves freely and discover the different women in leadership positions, all while they learn the difference between Feminism and Trauma centered feminism.
The campaign activities started last week, November 4th, with posts centered around women’s need to express themselves and deeming their Instagram as a space to do that. Below is an outline of the discussions that are ahead.
- Week 2, “No one knows you like you, ” will highlight teaching young women methods of self evaluation
- Week 3, “Who runs the world? GIRLS.” will serve to highlight women in leadership roles.
- Week 4, “We Are Equal in Strength,” shows women the difference between different feminism.
- Week 5, “A Partner DOES NOT define me.” is centered around women understanding why they experience marriage panic at a certain age.
- Week 6, “Naturally Me.” encourages women to embrace the skin they were born into.
In conclusion, this campaign will form unity amongst women. “Women have many expectations placed on them by society – we are expected to look and behave a certain way, we are mothers and wives and often act as all things to all people.
